Chapter Fourteen

MOIS Headquarters, Tehran, Iran

The hallways of MOIS headquarters were all but empty as evening spread its wings over the Islamic Republic. In the inner sanctum of Jalal Rahimi’s office, a lone light cast its feeble glow over a desk. The man who sat behind the desk had a grim face. He didn’t like to be out of control, and he certainly didn’t like being made a fool. His protégé, whom he had treated like a son, had suddenly gone missing with the young American woman entrusted to him. Jalal contemplated all the possibilities. Never once had he doubted the loyalty of Cyrus Hassani. Cyrus belonged to him; he was his most trusted aide. However, what was he to make of today’s events? He rubbed his beard with dissatisfaction as he waited for the call from Mikhail Pradkov.

The ringing phone shattered the silence. He picked it up, anxious to unravel the mystery.

“Dobrey vicha, Mikhail. Thank you for getting back to me so soon.”

“Asr be kheyr, Jalal. I’ve heard from my people in Washington. It’s late, so I’ll get right down to the matter of your intelligence request. Your American escapee is the daughter of a prominent nuclear physicist, Dr. Aleck Wallace, a professor at MIT. At one time, he was involved with a government nuclear project, but for reasons unknown, it ceased operation.

“It seems Layla Rose Wallace is his only child. The mother died about five years ago. The mother is of interest. Rebecca Rose was born and raised in Israel, where her parents live to this day. Also noteworthy, Aleck Wallace was the roommate at Harvard of the prime minister of Israel. A coincidence warranting deeper analysis. All of it probably amounts to nothing except for the strange disappearance of the professor a few days ago following his daughter’s kidnapping in Dubai. Which, Jalal, you conveniently failed to mention. The FBI flubbed up and didn’t do their homework. Apparently, what the professor worked on in the past is of national interest and makes him extremely valuable, particularly to adversarial nations such as yours and mine.

“The FBI conducted a surprise visit to his home the other night to place him in protective custody, but he had already flown the coop. By the way, he didn’t leave on a commercial flight. How he got out is the fodder of speculation. My guess is the Israelis. It seems his disappearance left the FBI holding their jock straps, and from what my people tell me, there’s an all-out push to ascertain his whereabouts. I would surmise the FBI’s failure to locate the girl or expedite her release might have forced her father to seek help elsewhere. As you can imagine, a call to the prime minister of Israel would elicit an immediate response, given their history and the father’s value. If it is the Israelis, they’ve stumbled upon a godsend. Aleck Wallace could significantly raise their stakes in the nuclear field. The man is a genius, and from what I understand, has continued his work on a new method of enriching uranium that’s a game changer.
